The poetic expressions of these poems provoke emotion to the reader and help them to relate to Hardys personal grief in some way. One of the poems where this effect is apparent is The Voice. The extended metaphor of the wind has taken the naturalistic entity of the wind and changed it into Emmas voice haunting him and thus personifying it to be Emma. The wind also creates an idea of Hardys longing for her to return to him, this is portrayed by the way Hardy creates the effect of an echo, call to me, call to me not only does the repetition demonstrate an echo it also helps the reader to grasp the fact that Hardy feels hopeless in his searching for Emma, as whatever he does he will not be able to retrieve her. This poetic expression of the wind is displayed with various free and loose punctuation to create the idea of Emma being now free and changeable, like the wind itself, you had changed from the one who was all to me she is now illusive and cannot be seen, causing Hardys grief to increase as it is shown in the poem that he will not be able to see her again. The way in which the poem is written shows an obvious regret, this was that Hardy took what he had with Emma whilst she was alive for granted and now she is no longer around her loss has reawakened his romance with her and he now sees her as he did when they first met, which he knows, is now too late. He sees he in the air-blue gown that he did when he first met her, however, this also has another meaning, of how Emma is now all around and immortal, however, even though she is all around the grief of the situation is that Hardy can never see her. Knowing this, Hardy goes on to say that he will continue faltering forward as he knows that Emma is being ever dissolved, like the wind, her spirit is fading away. Comparing Emma with the wind shows how Hardy feels and how he senses that she is fading away from him, enhancing his grief and heartache. Throughout The Voice the poetic expression of nature haunting Hardy as though Emma has turned into the wind and has turned into the woman calling, creating the sense of insistence, that perhaps Emma wants Hardy to continue his search for her memory. The metaphor the wind presents shows that it has a hold over Hardy and also the power to move him, this emphasises his personal grief as he shows is helplessness due to the fact that no matter how hard he tried to recapture Emmas memory, he will never get her back. Similarly to The Voice, Beeny Cliff also mourns Emmas loss and shows Hardys personal grief over this fact. However in this poem it seems apparent that Hardy reluctantly accepts that Emma has gone and however hard he tries to reconnect to her, this wish will never come true. The poem itself begins with a regretful yearning tone that continues throughout, O the opal and sapphire of that wandering western sea the opening to the poem of O creates a yearning emotion that sets a theme for the rest of the poem, it is made very obvious that Hardy misses Emmas presence and the description of the precious stones, opal and sapphire reflect upon Hardys precious memories of his wife, however memories are all he has, which shows the grief given through his poetic expression as all he has left of Emma are his memories. He then continues to show his regret, the woman whom I loved so, and who loyally loved me this perhaps shows Hardys regret towards not showing Emma his true feelings towards her whilst she was alive, and also how he felt that she loyally loved him, yet he did not show the same loyalty.  Throughout the first three stanzas of the poem, it seems as thought Hardy is trying to elicit the emotion of memory so that he can bring back the happiness he felt when he was with Emma at Beeny Cliff. He uses various poetic expressions, for example, describing the scene to encapsulate the beauty of that day as to them both at the time it was idyllic, the waves seemed far away this however doesnt just help the reader understand the way the scene appeared, but also the atmosphere itself. It seemed as though their love for each other transported them so they were unaware of the world around them. The grief that Hardy now feels causes the day he is describing to become even more tragic as it seems he will never be that happy again. After Hardy has tried to recapture Emmas memory and realises that it will not work as no matter how much he tries to remember that day and how much he retells his feelings and regrets about Emma the memories of her will never bring her back to him. It is after this realisation that Hardy moves on to speak about how Emma has in fact gone from his life, and he knows this and describes a divide between them now, using the metaphor of the cliff itself, bulks old Beeny to the sky shows how there is barrier between the two. The description of the cliffs chasmal, which are the splits in the rocks are perhaps metaphorical to Hardy and Emmas relationship as it is now, and the barrier between life and death that forever puzzles Hardy. From this point on there is obvious wistful regret that Hardy will never be back at that place of beauty with Emma, however he then realises that all Beeny is, is a cliff and that no matter how much Hardy tries to reawaken that day there with Emma it will not bring her back. Hardys grief and heartache is apparent as he is tired of wondering where Emma is then therefore no longer questions this, and merely accepts that the woman is- elsewhere- the poetic expression of this phrase shows Hardys pause whilst he is thinking about where Emma actually is, and it also creates the idea that he doesnt know where she is but he does know he can never find her, illuminating his grief as he has now accepted the fact that he will never find Emma anywhere, even where he feels her memory is at its strongest. The ending of this poem also reflects how Hardy feels, as Emma nor knows, nor cares for Beeny, and will laugh there nevermore. Hardys grief is again emphasised as he will never recapture Emma as she is now completely indifferent to the word and her life with Hardy, and this allows him to finally accept that Emma is gone and finished, it is almost as though this revelation has given Hardy a sense of finality to his situation. In conclusion, Hardy uses many different ways to give poetic expression to his personal grief, ranging from personifying nature to represent Emma to finally allowing himself to believe that she is gone, and knowing that all he now has are his memories, and that no matter how hard he tries, they will never bring Emma back, which Hardy has finally accepted, no matter how much grief and anguish it may have caused him.

After reading pieces of literature from both George Orwell and Martin Luther King, the pieces of literature were wrote about thirteen years apart therefore they used very different methods, perspectives, and purposes.. Martin Luther King uses allusions and a variety of indirect insults where he states nation flaws but does not direct them towards someone directly. Orwell uses more themes, morality plays, myths and metaphors. As Kings purpose is to inform the audience that they are aware of the injustice going on, and Orwell is entertaining the audience with such interesting and rare short nolvels. These two themes are shown in the writing â€Å"Shooting An Elephant† in where he wants to fit in to a society where the only way to conquer that is to shoot an insane elephant that escaped, as much as he didn’t want to do it due his values and morals he did it to look good in front of the village and the citizens. He kept repeating the word â€Å"mus t† as if he was being forced by the people just for him to fit in. In the writing â€Å"How the Poor Die† Orwell uses plenty of detail when he describes the room, the people, and the treatments they practice on them. For example, the way he described the room was â€Å"..Ill-lit room, full of murmuring voiced with three rows of beds surprisingly close together. There was a foul smell, faecal and yet sweetish†. He described the people not by names but by numbers as they did at the hospital that sounded more like a practice lab in which the doctor and students examined the patients to see what was wrong, the people with the worst and rare illnesses got the most attention because those were the most interesting cases. The people with common cases were left in abundance to die without treatment of attention. As you may noticed both men use different methods but you also have to keep in mind that the writings are used with two different perspectives and purposes. Martin Luther King gives a much deeper emotional and touching tone and feeling because he was actually living it at the moment the speech was given, he saw how the African American people were being treated hoe they were segregated and treated unequal to the rest of society. Therefore, the speech gives the reader a totally different feel. George Orwell writes with more detail but also with the purpose of entertaining the reader. With the writing â€Å"How the Poor Die† he definitely conquered the purpose of entertaining because he kept the reader attached to the reading with the detailing yet very unique writing. He lets his imagination run which makes the readers keep reading because he uses such creative stories that no reader could even imagine in reading. Both men write different, although they were written about thirteen years ago, they were both written with different purposes. One to entertain and the other to inform, Martin Luther King makes the readers and audience comprehend how they are aware of the treatment given and how the nation has not kept its promise about all men being created equal. While Orwell uses his creative mind to form short novels that make him as a person a lot more interesting and adds spice to his work.

The teacher I most remember as a great teacher in my years of schooling would definitely be Mrs. Rose, my 9th grade English teacher.   Mrs. Rose combined the qualities of motivation, skill and content mastery in a way that I still remember today.   As a freshman in high school, I had not been exposed to any terribly difficult courses.   Most of the junior high work I did was simply answering questions or writing reports which did not have to well-cite or even grammatically correct.   I learned quickly that, because I was relatively smart to begin with, I could get away with a minimum of effort and studying. Mrs. Rose changed all that.   On the first day she mentioned the usual information – grading, pop quizzes, class materials and behavior expectations.   I had heard all this before, so I half-listened, planting polite expression on my face while my mind wandered.   Imagine my shock when we had a pop quiz of the first day’s information the very next day!   I did very poorly, to which I was not accustomed.   Worse yet, now my teacher’s first impression of me was that of a slacker.   I had to wake up and work extra hard to pull up that first low quiz grade.   Looking back, I am sure that was precisely her intention for all of us. As the year progressed, we were all subjected to coursework the likes of which simply did not exist in junior high.   We had to learn grammar, diagram sentences, write essay upon essay and read countless novels and plays without the luxury of Cliff’s Notes.   This era was pre-internet study aids!   We tried to complain that we had no foundation for this to which Mrs. Rose replied, â€Å"If that is true, it is neither your fault nor mine.   Unfortunately, we must correct it.† She could blend just the right amount of feeling for my battle with the semi-colon with the rigor of the curriculum itself.   She let my misuse go a couple of times, but on the third incident, I got an ‘F’ for punctuation in my essay.   I was floored and asked her to let me revise it (again).   She said â€Å"no.†Ã‚   From that point on, I have never, to my knowledge, misused a semicolon; however, I find such examples frequently in magazines and newspapers now.   Again, that particular strategy worked wonders for me and all the others in my class.   Her encouragement wasn’t overdone, but I could tell she really wanted me to learn. At times, I would be seized by jealousy when my friends in other classes would laugh at how easy their English class was, how like 8th grade it was, and how they were getting easy ‘A’s.   I had to work hard for my grades and resented their extra free time.   Later, though, I understood the importance of my 9th grade English class and Mrs. Rose.   I did not struggle nearly as much as my peers in upper level high school classes and in college courses where professors were even more demanding.   I firmly believe that Mrs. Rose knew more about grammar and writing than any of them and was grateful that I had a chance to learn from her early on in my education rather than have to suffer later. Mrs. Rose, who I believe has now passed away, was an exemplary teacher.   Try as I might, I could never devise a sentence she could not diagram.   She seemed to take pride in my educational victories, such as my high SAT verbal score and my college acceptance.   As a result, I decided to become a teacher myself and attempt to emulate Mrs. Rose in all that I do in my classes.   I, from experience now, know that Mrs. Rose did not receive any monetary rewards for her commitment to teaching.   In fact, our rewards as teachers are much more internal.   However, I am confident that she knew her influence on me because I told her, as did many other students I knew.   When a student tells me how much I have helped them, I know how she felt then.

Unknowingly Living With Mental Illnesses Mental illnesses have increased throughout a period of years and people have accepted them into their daily routines, so much so, that it almost seems like a normal thing to cope with. But what people do not ask themselves often is how did this ailment begin? In the story â€Å"Never Marry a Mexican† by Sandra Cisneros, she introduces a character named Clemencia- a troubled young women with a history of family problems and a natural instinct to self destruct. I am writing about this story because in a way, Clemencia and I have similarities. She and I both had a mother who cheated on her husband and we both have emotional scars that were never properly healed. A type of trauma like this stays with a person for a while and sometimes forever, especially if they do not learn how to forgive, accept, and move on. A child’s adolescence is the rise of their future characteristics; you can either let nature  raise a child or you can nurture them, though, however you choose, there will be some kind of psychology applied to their environment. Clemencia grew up in more of a nature environment being left to fend for herself and it seemed to have caused her psychological distress: â€Å"psychological discomfort that interferes with your activities of daily living. Psychological distress can result in negative views of the environment, others, and the self.† (study.com). Some symptoms of P.D. are obsessive thoughts or compulsions and reckless acts. Clemencia did not show too much happiness throughout the affair because she knew Drew was a man who would never stay with her when the sun would rise or no matter how many times she asked him to leave his wife for her, he would not. But she did find joy through secretly taunting Megan by having a romantic affair with her husband. Reckless ac ts like Clemencia’s are not considered normal and rather unhealthy. She knew her actions were specifically meant for bad intentions and pursued them to feel satisfaction. Though this story did not mention Clemencia having any mental illnesses, it could be one explanation for her erratic behavior. When her father had passed away, she was not given the proper care to grief and move on. She did not have the support of her mother to hold her and tell her everything would be okay. When her mother passed away, Clemencia felt nothing anymore. Not towards her mother, not towards her students, and not towards the affair she was having with Drew. A symptom like this is a sign of a sociopath: â€Å"a person with a psychopathic personality whose behavior is antisocial, often criminal, and who lacks a sense of moral responsibility or social conscience.† (Dictionary.com). A sociopath can be spotted through many observations but a specific symptom that resembled Clemencia was â€Å"Lack of remorse and shame† (Psychology Today). When she and Drew were having an affair, Clemencia never stopped to think about how this would affect his marriage and what hi s wife Megan would think of it. She enjoyed being a mistress in general but she was obsessed with Drew the most. She also never considered how this might possibly affect her personally in the future when she tries maturing and finding a healthy relationship. Actions like hers are capable of causing her more trauma than what she has already experienced. Another symptom Clemencia had was â€Å"Absence of delusions and other signs of irrational thinking†. (Psychology Today). When Drew was being phoned at four in the morning, Megan answered with a polite voice. Megan was not aware the phone was from her husband’s mistress, but this senseless act brought Clemencia an overpowering feeling of satisfaction and joy. All she could say to him was â€Å"Drew? That dumb bitch of a wife of yours†¦ that stupid stupid stupid†¦ Excuse me, honey. It cracked me up.† (Cisneros 61). Clemencia showed her worst possible behavior when she began putting gummy bears inside of Megan’s personal belongings. I understand Drew should have never gotten involved with anyone if we was already married. But I do not understand how Clemencia could be this delusional to stash gummy bears inside of his wife’s personal belongings- in places only Megan would look. Only a person who is emotionally distressed can be capable of sc heming at this level. A sociopath tends to have an oversized ego during a relationship. Many times Clemencia tried to convince Drew he was nothing without her. â€Å"They are narcissists to the extreme, with a huge sense of entitlement† (Huffington Post). She would take credit for the man he was and spoke of herself sounding pompous. Towards the end of the story, she spoke to Drew’s son, making her side of the story sound as if Drew was responsible for her acts and failures. But the very last symptom Clemencia proved to possibly be a sociopath was her talk of suicide. She was not convinced in the end of her story that she would ever actually commit suicide. But she did speak of it and consider it towards herself and the possible death of others. Though her suicide thoughts are in her mind- a sociopath never actually carries on the thought. That does not mean she is not a threat to other people. Her traumatic situation impacted her life gradually and even though she did not act physically vio lent, Clemencia’s past could still affect her future. The Ivory Coast is located on the South coast of West Africa. Surrounding countries include Guinea, Liberia, Burkina Faso and Ghana. The country is about 322,463 sq. Kilometers. Today, there are over 20 million people living in the Ivory Coast. There are about 39 people per sq. Kilometer. There is a pretty even number of males to females, 51% males, to 49 % females. The life expectancy age is approximately 59 years old. People of the Ivory Coast practice many different religions. These religions include traditional beliefs practiced and developed in certain varying villages, Christianity, Roman Catholicism and Islam. The current president is Alassane Ouattara. Most people do not continue school after the primary level. There are multiple factors that contribute to such a low number of educated individuals. One of the main reasons that education is at such a decline now, is because of the current political crisis. The 2010 presidential election between incumbent Laurent Gbagbo and opposition member Alassane Ouattara resulted in a political standoff and violent conflict after Gbagbo refused to honor the results that declared Ouattara the winner. Two elections were held. The initial election did not yield a winner and a second electoral round was held on November 28, 2010. The polling results were released on December 2, 2010 and declared Ouattara the new president of Cà ´te d’Ivoire after he received 54.1% of the vote. The political stalemate turned violent and caused the decline of state security, threatened regional stability, and resulted in gross human rights violations and violence against civilians. The UN reported in March 2011 that over 1000 people were killed in clashes, and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees stated that over 500,000 Ivorians were forcibly displaced, and 94,000 Ivorians fled to neighboring Liberia out of fear of violence. The country seemed to be divided. Forces loyal to Gbagbo and Ouattara were accused of gross human rights against civilians which could amount to crimes against humanity including enforced disappearances, sexual violence, and extrajudicial killings. After months of defying the outcome of the presidential election, Laurent Gbagbo was arrested by Ouattara forces on 11 April 2011 following an attack o n his residence in Abidjan. Alassane Ouattara immediately called for the establishment of a truth and reconciliation commission. Cà ´te d’Ivoire now faces many challenges as a result of the far reaching effects of the crisis, including the restoration of peace and security, the prevention of further human rights abuses, and the delivery of humanitarian aid. Alassane Ouattara’s government must now foster peace and reconciliation in Cà ´te d’Ivoire and insure that those responsible for gross human rights violations are held accountable. After the 2010 presidential crisis there were nearly 800,000 children out of school due to the crisis and some are still waiting to get back to learning. â€Å"We arrived at school at 7:30 a.m. as we always do on a school day. At exactly 8:30 we could hear shooting coming from the direction of a neighbouring village,† recalls Pafait Guei, a 14-year-old boy who attended primary school in the western area of Ivory Coast. Instead of being in school, youn g children are seen selling goods on road sides in attempt to earn very little money to support themselves and their family. In a venture to try and help the Ivory Coast education system we have devised a plan that will ultimately rebuild the Ivory Coast education system. Our plan is to obtain a minimum of $10,000,000 dollars from the world bank and Oprah Winfrey to help at least 100,000 children by distributing school bags filled with supplies such as textbooks, pens, pencils, eraser, pencil sharpener to support families in need. We also want to re-open/re-build many schools that were affected by the crisis. Even the ones that have re-opened have a shortage in desks, chairs, and supplies. We plan on hiring more teachers. Most of the schools have 1 teacher per 50 students. We will use all of the money to help the government pay for the teacher’s salaries and hopefully the country will move in the right direction and will be able to afford and continue our efforts once the money finishes. We feel as though Oprah would be a good choice as a financial contributor because of her stand on education, especially after building the school in South Africa, she was quoted saying: â€Å"I think the reason not just Africa but the world is in the state that it is because of a lack of leadership on all levels of government and particularly in regard to schools and schooling for poor children. The best way to effect change long term is to give children exposure and opportunity and nurture them to understand their own power and possibility.† We hope that she would be willing to aid us with a significant amount of funds to move the Ivory Coast forward in the right direction. There are many commendable reasons to donate money to the Ivory Coast. Donating money to the Ivory Coast would only result in positive effects. Only about half of the population is illiterate and many children are not enrolled in school (between the ages 6-10). By donating money to the Ivory Coast, we will be able to begin to change the statistics by creating more education opportunities. We also will make educational resources more accessible to everyone. Those who have some form of education can have the opportunity to extend their education, and those who have no or very little education would have the chance to receive one. Having better education opportunities would not only benefit those going to school, but it would also create jobs. There is usually about one teacher to every fifty children, but with the money we receive, we plan to hire more teachers. Less children in the classrooms means that the children could receive better and more direct attention. This can ensure that the material being taught is actually getting across to each student, and it will become easier to give one on one attention to those who need i t if there are more teachers available to help. Not to mention the fact that the employment rate will increase providing more individuals with a source of income. If anyone were to decide to donate or contribute money to the Ivory Coast you would be a part of our plan to help to build a stronger economy. One of the many reasons Africa is suffering as a whole is because of the lack of necessary resources needed to obtain a good paying job. If we do not invest in education, the education system will continue to fail. Majority of people in The Ivory Coast do not continue schooling after primary school because they do not have the funds for college and feel that it more important to get a job barely making ends meats. But if we can provide money for schooling and education, this can create a better future not just for the Ivory Coast but for Africa as well. If people were to have the credentials needed to land a decent job, this could slowly start to increase income in households. Donations could also help begin to restore order in the Ivory Coast. Because people were displaced, had to flee, or were forced out of their homes, many people of all ag es could not continue to go to school. The new regulatory protections rushed by the UK`s government have been implemented with the aim of preventing the outburst of another financial crisis. The new policies enacted by the governments have established an economy not ready for a financial crisis. The policies have created room for perhaps a much worse crisis in the future.
